From CoBrA to drilling oil

16 March 2019 to 22 March 2020

The optimistic Man with the sun made by Karel Appel shortly after World War II, is one of the favourites of the visitors of the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam. It is currently on display again together with new works of Zoro Feigl, among others. For his impressive installation, the artist used drilling oil as the most important ingredient. The exhibition comprises top pieces from our collection as well as new acquisitions. Some of the art is exhibited for the first time.

Art about the world surrounding us

This collection comprises politically or socially committed contemporary art, which was an important focal point for collecting the works. Anne Wenzel and Charlotte Schleiffert are two names that have their art displayed in the exhibition.

CoBrA and abstract work

The exhibition provides a clear insight into the way the Museum collects its artworks. In addition to engaged art, there is also work by CoBrA artists. These works were bought by director Pierre Janssen in the fifties. The colourful paintings contrast with the abstract work of Jan Schoonhoven, which is literally colourless. These artists represent abstract art, the third theme of the Museum.

Mondriaan Fund

The Stedelijk Museum Schiedam is in a position to buy new work partly thanks to investments of the Mondriaan Fund. This year, this nationwide fund has added € 75,000 to the Museum budget. The amount has doubled in comparison to last year and is also meant to intensify our cooperation with SCHUNK*. Since last year the two museums have mutually attuned their acquisition policies.
