May 12 - 2 September 2012
From 12 May to 2 September the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam will present the first solo exhibition in a Dutch museum of the work of Rinus Van de Velde, The Lost Bishop. This young Belgian artist creates large-scale charcoal drawings, in combination with text on the wall or on the drawings themselves. Especially for this exhibition, Van de Velde has produced a drawing measuring 9 x 3 metres on an aluminium stand-alone wall, which depicts, along with several other works on paper, the legendary chess match between the two great chess masters of the 20th century, Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky. However, this world event is presented within Van de Velde’s universe, art-directed in his own specific way after an interval of 40 years.

Unisono 25: Aukje Koks. Preludes
12 May - 2 September 2012
Unisono 25: Aukje Koks. Preludes. is the first museum exhibition of the work of Aukje Koks in the Netherlands. Koks’s paintings are visual puzzles in which the spectator’s perception constantly oscillates between reality and illusion. Koks combines commonplace objects with classical motives from the visual arts. Seemingly nondescript items are assigned significance within an art-historical context, as an appeal is made to our collective visual memory. Koks plays with artistic traditions in an infectious manner, forcing these a step further. What are we actually perceiving and what do we think we are perceiving?

Collectionpresentation Art after 1945
14 February 2010 - 8 July 2012
In 2010, the Schiedam Municipal Museum will present its Collection of Post-war Art. Starting point for this exhibition will be the new collection plan for Dutch Art after 1945. In this plan, the emphasis will be on the relationships between the core art collections. From the viewpoint of present-day art, a connection is made with NUL and CoBrA in five themes: War, Animals, Matter, Travel, Rhythm & Regularity.
The concept of the exhibition has been elaborated in conjunction with eleven final-year pupils of Schiedam Municipal Grammar School, acting as assistant curators. Along with the museum director, they selected the works, wrote the texts and came up with innovative ideas for the design and set-up of the exhibition.
